My New Year’s blog last year included motivational quotes from many people I met in 2017 through the course of starting my own business. Many of the sources of that motivation are still in my life. Melissa Boney www.blackhawkhomes.com and I have joint ventured on my first project – the new build at 308 Pitt Street www.gileadhomesolutions.com/308-pitt-street/ . Amy Mahjoory www.blueinkhomes.com mentored me through out the year. We met in Richmond, Virginia this summer. Yes, I felt like I met a rock star. Sat in on Christy Duckett Harris’ www.southernhousesnow.com/ presentation on mobile home investing at Ignite, where she packed the room, like a rock star!
This year has been marked by change. I left teaching in January 2018 to work for the Navy and I felt like my brain was overloaded for most of the year, still learning about real estate investing, as well as my new responsibilities as a Configuration Management Lead for two programs. It’s still difficult to explain what I do, but call me if you’d like to hear about it 🙂 I am not a rockstar but I work with real rocket scientists. My head feels like a snowglobe at least once a week still, but I know I am approaching mastery.
To quote another rockstar, Linda Pederson who I met and learned from at the Houston Bootcamp, I have had to bob & weave like crazy in 2018. I thought I was going to be a wholesaler. I went to Rehab Bootcamp and began to believe I could flip a house. Bob and weave. I got a vacant lot under contract on the last day of my 14 year teaching career and my first project was new construction. Bob and weave. I thought I was really good at juggling a busy schedule. Now I have a hard time imagining I could handle multiple real estate projects and my full time government job, despite knowing I wanted to do that with joint venture partners. Part of my original motivation when I started my business, the financial part, evaporated when I got a raise when I left teaching and again at the end of the first year. Bob and weave.
I must give a big shout out to my biggest supporters – my realtor Marla Aste and my joint venture partner Melissa Boney. These jokers have spent a lot of time answering my questions, listening to my ideas, and being great friends.
For 2019, my real estate focus is longer term. I want to be able to retire in ten to 11 years when I am 57 or 58. Most likely I won’t stop working, but I want to stop commuting. I would like my real estate business to pay off my house in the next ten years. AND I want to survive my son’s transition out of high school and off to college with grace and by supporting him.
308 Pitt Street will be ready soon! Bring me a buyer before we get it on the market and there is cash in it for you.
Finally a few favorite quotes from my Friday social media posts. All the best to you and your family in 2019!
If you don’t like your life, change it. If you don’t like some part of your life, work on it and change it. Life is way too short to be miserable.
